Chopped | A Business Simulation on Lean Thinking
Chopped is a high-energy business simulation that turns Lean Thinking into a TV-style cooking contest — three rounds, one kitchen, and a room full of teams racing the clock to plate up under pressure.
Teams run a restaurant kitchen, building Play-Doh dishes to a menu-card spec while the orders keep coming. What starts as happy chaos becomes a live lesson in standard work, flow and waste: by the final round they’re mapping processes, running a Kanban board with WIP limits, and collaborating across teams to get one big order out on time. Every principle is discovered on the floor first, then locked in during the debrief.
What your people walk away with
- A felt understanding of Lean Thinking — standard work, the 8 wastes, and why over-production quietly eats margin
- Hands-on practice with process mapping, flow & pull — a real Kanban board with WIP limits
- The habit of Kaizen — small, daily improvement owned by the people doing the work
- How collaboration and balanced capacity beat local speed when the whole system has to deliver
- One concrete change each person commits to making at work on Monday
The three rounds
- Round 1 · Grill Drill — make identical items to spec. The lesson: standardisation and waste.
- Round 2 · Big Bite Challenge — serve five orders that arrive one at a time. The lesson: process mapping, flow, Kanban and Kaizen.
- Round 3 · Ghost Restaurant — teams merge into clusters to deliver one bulk order. The lesson: collaboration, capacity and standard work across teams.
